Pre-Tour: Why Small Groups in the Home?

We are quite adamant that the Engagement Project be done in a small group and in the home.

First, why a small group? The benefits of a small group are numerous. Jesus encouraged this sort of “gathering together” when He said, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” This is quite a carrot! And, our experience (from the Truth Project) has borne that out: God seems to deeply bless the gathering of His people as opposed to doing it isolated from others.  Another huge advantage is the discussion time. Often, someone will ask a question or make a comment that provokes something in your own heart and mind that would not have happened on your own. The Spirit of God, dwelling in other believers, speaks to us through them. And, we sometimes have something to offer another in this kind of setting. There is something truly sweet about the fellowship of God’s people, especially when it is done in a small group rather than a large church gathering where it is easy to get lost. And finally, and most important, the small group leader is going to be praying for you, by name, faithfully throughout each week. God has answered those prayers all over the world as countless people have been deeply transformed by His work.

Second, why in the home? You know, there is just something special about gathering in someone’s home that doesn’t happen in a sterile classroom. This is not intended to demean the church or Sunday school meetings, but most everyone I have met knows that there is something about gathering together in a living room that is totally different. I have spoken to many, many people and can tell the difference when someone has done the Truth Project in Sunday School versus in a home. One speaks of great cinema graphics; the other speaks of radical, personal transformation. This is the power of the small group, prayer, and meeting in the home. We do not break bread together enough in the Body of Christ.

So, we are going to encourage the Engagement Project to be done in small groups, in the home, led by someone who will be dedicated and committed to praying for each guest and giving them the opportunity to discuss what God is provoking within them. This is the best recipe for seeing God transform His people… and that is what we are praying for!
